ODT’s Most-Read Stories This Week—March 25

Besides a lingering fascination with 3D printing, the usual suspects drove ODT website traffic this past week: patents, product approvals, and patronage.

Loci Orthopaedics garnered the most page views with a new patent for the bespoke implantation set for its InDx CMC Implant System. In addition to the recently granted patent, other granted patents include the core design of its implant technology, the use of the same biomechanical design in additional joints, discrete elements of the implant design, and the use of the design post trapeziectomy. Furthermore, the company recently received notification from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office of its intention to grant a patent for the conversion of the design from a hemi-arthroplasty to a total arthroplasty. In total, the company has now been granted six individual patents for its implant system to treat thumb base joint arthritis.

3D LifePrints attracted cyber visitors with its name change (to Insight Surgery) and its U.S. business launch (in Houston), while Companion Spine LLC enticed web guests with $60.1 million in new financing. Formed by Viscogliosi Brothers LLC in 2020, Companion Spine addresses the two largest indications of the overall spine market: Lumbar Spinal Stenosis (LSS) and Degenerative Disc Disease (DDD), without spine fusion surgery. The company focuses on interventional spine pain treatment with revisable, minimally invasive, implants, focused on motion preservation, and precision diagnostics to allow for comprehensive spine health through offering a total spine care continuum approach for patients, spine pain specialists, treatment centers, and payors. 

Finally, NuVasive amassed significant page views by winning FDA 510(k) clearance for an expanded use of its Precice all-internal limb lengthening solution (pediatric patients). Precice is a magnetically adjustable technology that utilizes an external remote to non-invasively lengthen implants. The Precice nail has been implanted more than 15,000 times, by more than 2,000 surgeons, and in nearly 50 countries.
